Remember you can listen to the day’s story of the music whilst reading my blog by clicking this link.  2001, English singer and radio presenter Ronnie Hilton died from a stroke aged 73. Hilton scored a total of 18 UK Top 40 hits during his career including the 1956 No.1 ‘No Other Love.

We had another grey and overcast day today but, nevertheless, we went for a brisk walk along Poniente Playa in Benidorm. We found ourselves chatting with an elderly gent from the Basque Country who was down in Benidorm for a week's holiday. Later we popped into the restaurant by the Marina and had a very nice chat with a young man called Adrian who is soon going to start his studies as a physiotherapist. He is planning to go to London and we were discussing the difficulties of the young people in Spain. Fortunately for Adrian his English is really good and that will be a really good start for him when he goes to London. He is a really nice guy and is quite a good example of the talent in this country which has to go to other countries to get employment. We wish him well.

It was my Spanish class yesterday and we had a discussion about the names of foods. There were quite a few names of fruit and veg I hadn't heard of and there are many fish which I have not seen. I'm not the biggest fish eater and I'm not going to dwell on my diminished vocabulary. I have no intention of expanding my knowledge of the names of fish. I don't like the smell of fish. I don't like the look of fish and I certainly don't enjoy eating them.  I don't blame them. I don't trust them and I only tend to eat cod when I feel brave. I am aware the fish carries a worm. If I'm honest I didn't like the idea of this when I first heard about it. Why should anyone enjoy eating a fish with worms?

CIMG5567A heavy police presence descended on calle Pola de Siero, at Playa de los Locos in Torrevieja on Saturday, when the 112 emergency coordination centre received a call reporting a man in the street threatening to shoot a neighbour with a shotgun.

The call was made at around 8 pm on Saturday, to which nine patrol cars attended, with the Guardia Civil, Local Police and support teams all rushing to the scene.

The situation was quickly brought under control and was then discovered to be a dispute between neighbours. The man with the gun, said to be of “foreign” nationality, was taken to the police station, without further incident.  SpanishVida:

You probably have heard most of the Horse Meat Jokes by now but they have been put into a compendium which we can now reveal.

CIMG5603To eat or not to eat a Tesco burger?..........That is Equestrian!

Still having a bit of trouble after eating one of the Tesco's burgers containing horsemeat. My condition is now stable, I have had the trots but after overcoming a few hurdles, I'm odds on to make a full recovery although the doctor said it was a bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted!

If you think Tesco's Horse burgers are bad, you should try their quarter pandas..
Tesco are giving treble points on your clubcard for all burgers and petrol, starting Monday..The deal is call Only Fuel and Horses.  Funny thing is ...I always thought Tesco burgers were pony!

In response to the revelation about horse meat in Tesco burgers, they have released a statement stating that they also cater for vegetarians..They said " We are also putting UniQuorn in the veggie burgers"

I went to the freezer to check my Tesco burgers and....THEY'RE OFF...It turns out that the horses were molested before they were turned into burgers...The police are asking anyone who knew Jimmy Saddle to come forward.  I'm never eating another one of those Tesco burgers. Bloody things gave me the trots...Hopefully it won't last furlong!  Those Tesco horse burgers were nice, but I prefer My Lidl Pony.I bought a burger at Tesco's cafe, the waitress said "would you like anything on it?" I replied " a fiver each way ".
I met a lady who'd had it tough lately working on the meat counter at Tesco's......She told me it feels like I'm flogging a dead horse!

Tesco say they're out of stock on Burgers but they've got a fresh delivery coming in at 10 to 1. HMV Vouchers now being accepted at Tesco. Just tell them HMV stands for Horse Meat Voucher.  Had a burger last night, still got a bit between my teeth

CIMG6187The Newfoundland Department of Employment claimed a boat owner wasn't paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent to Burin to investigate him.

GOVT AGENT: "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them".

Boat Owner: "Well, there's  Clarence, my hired hand, he's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board. Then there's the mentally challenged guy. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of Lamb's rum and a dozen Labatt Lite every Saturday night so he can cope with life. He also gets to sleep with my wife occasionally".

GOVT AGENT: "That's the guy I want to talk to - the mentally challenged one".

Boat Owner: "That'll be me. What'd you want to know"?

 CIMG6217Events 20th February

1673 – The first recorded wine auction took place in London. Why?

1809 – The U.S. Supreme Court ruled the power of the federal government was greater than that of any individual state. I would agree that the whole must always be bigger than a part

1815 – The USS Constitution, under Captain Charles Stewart fought the British shipsCyane and Levant. The Constitution captures both, but lost the Levant after encountering a British squadron. The Constitution and the Cyane returned to New York safely on May 15, 1815. The Cyane was purchased and became the USS Cyane.Didn’t the Brits have the Battle of Waterloo to worry about?

1839 – The U.S. Congress prohibited dueling in the District of Columbia. They should have gone the whole hog and banned it everywhere…

1872 – Silas Noble and J.P. Cooley patented the toothpick manufacturing machine. A toothpick machine?

1962 – John Glenn made space history when he orbited the world three times in 4 hours, 55 minutes. He was the first American to orbit the Earth. He was aboard the Friendship 7 Mercury capsule. What a brave man

1993 – Two ten-year-old boys were charged by police in Liverpool, England, in the abduction and death of a toddler. The two boys were later convicted. Many people are still upset that the two murderers of the toddler, Jamie Bolger, were given new identities and protection. One has recently been in trouble with the police again. The family of poor Jamie Bolger has never really recovered from this horrific act.

2002 – In Reqa Al-Gharbiya, Egypt, a fire raced through a train killing at least 370 people and injuring at least 65. This makes awful reading

Music Events 20th February

1958, Billed as ‘The Big Gold Record Stars’ Bill Haley and his Comets, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly & The Crickets, Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmie Rodgers all appeared on the first date of a six day tour of Florida. This would have been fantastic

1963, The Beatles drove through the night from Liverpool to London to appear on the live lunchtime BBC radio program “Parade of the Pops.” Performing ‘Love Me Do’ and ‘Please Please Me’, the appearance lasted just over 4 minutes. They then drove another 180 mile trip back north for their performance that night at the Swimming Baths, Doncaster, Yorkshire. We didn’t realise how much travelling they were doing to achieve their success

1964, The Bachelors were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Diane.’ This was the Irish trio’s only UK No.1 from 16 other UK Top 40 hits. Dec Cluskey has been on my show and tells us about the group on my podcast at www.vincetracy.com
1970, The single ‘Instant Karma’ by The Plastic Ono Band was released in the US. John Lennon had written, recorded and mixed the track all in one day on the 22nd January 1970. I think it is a bog standard track personally
