Iris's Challenge -Answer at the foot of the page

(1)Was born Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien in West Hampstead on16 April 1939 and died on 2 March 1999.Of all the female British pop artists of the 1960s, she made one of the biggest impressions on the American market where she was one of the most notable white soul artists.

(2) After finishing school in 1958, she responded to the advertisement to join an "established sister act” called The Lana Sisters with this vocal group, she developed the art of harmonising, microphone technique and recording; they did some television performances and played live both in the U.K. and at U.S. Air Force bases.

(3) In 1960, she left The Lana Sisters band and formed a pop-folk trio with her brother, and Reshad Feild (who was later replaced by Mike Hurst, the group traveled to Nashville , to record the album Folk Songs from the Hills. The American pop tunes that she heard during her stay there helped to turn her career from the folk and country towards the pop music rooted in rhythm and blues. They played their last concert together in October 1963.

(4) In November 1963 her first solo single, the soul-tinted "I Only Want to Be with You” was released. This single rose to No4 in the British charts and No12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. This song was also the first record played on BBC-TV's Top of the Pops program. It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc.

(5) Her South African tour was interrupted in December 1964, after she performed before an integrated audience at a theatre near Cape Town . Her flouting of the South African government’s segregation policy resulted in her deportation from that country. In the same year, she was voted the Top Female British Artist in the New Musical Express poll of the year, topping Lulu, Sandie Shaw and Cilla Black; she received the award again the following year.

(6) In 1974, she recorded the theme song for the TV series The Six Million Dollar Man. She put her career on hold in 1974, during this time she sang background vocals for Anne Murray's album Together and Elton John's album Caribou. Upon her return to England her physicians diagnosed her with breast cancer she died on the day she had been due to go to Buckingham Palace to receive her OBE award. The Queen gave permission for the medal to be presented to the singer in hospital where she died on March 2, 1999. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of 10 days after her death

Corny debate over sweeteners

If you really want to save your body, kiss the sweets goodbye. I don't care if they use corn syrup, beet syrup, sugar or fairy dust -- if it's got any kind of sweetener at all, it's anything but sweet.

So I had to laugh a bit at a nonsensical "debate" raging over a new study on high-fructose corn syrup.

Princeton researchers say their research on rats proves that HFCS is more likely to lead to obesity than plain-old sugar. But I'm not buying into this rodent tale.

The researchers gave four groups of rats all the food they could eat. In addition, one group got sugary water for 12 hours a day, another set of rats got water with HFCS for 12 hours a day, and a third group got that corn-sweetened water all day and night. The fourth group got no sweeteners at all.

After eight weeks, the rats on the 12-hour HFCS water weighed the most, while the control group weighed the least.

But you can't blame that weight gain on HFCS alone without some twisted logic... because the rats on the 24-hour corn sweetener weighed only slightly more than the control group, and even less than the sugar-fed rats.

So now, researchers are arguing over whether or not this study proves that HFCS is worse than sugar.

Truth is, the whole debate isn't worth a nest of rat scat, because the bottom line should be obvious to anyone who's paying attention: HFCS is making us fat, diabetic and dead. And plain old sugar would do the same exact thing -- if, like those corn sweeteners, it was in every single product.

The problem isn't one or the other, it's all sweeteners. They lack nutrition, have no health role inside the body and WILL make you fat and sick -- end of story.

Nothing sweet about sugars,

William Campbell Douglass II, M.D.

THE LOVE DRESS

A woman stopped by, unannounced, at her son's house. She knocked on the door then immediately walked in. She was shocked to see her daughter-in- law lying on the couch, totally
naked.

Soft music was playing, and the aroma of perfume filled the room. 'What are you doing?' she asked.

'I'm waiting for Justin to come home from work.' The daughter-in- law answered.

'But you're naked!' the mother-in- law exclaimed.

'This is my love dress,' the daughter-in- law explained.

'Love dress? But you're naked!'

'Justin loves me to wear this dress,' she explained.

'Every time he sees me in this dress, he instantly becomes romantic and ravages me for hours'

The mother-in- law left. When she got home she undressed, showered, put on her best perfume,
dimmed the lights, put on a romantic CD, and lay on the couch waiting for her husband to arrive.

Finally, her husband came home. He walked in and saw her lying there so provocatively.

'What are you doing?' he asked.

'This is my love dress,' she whispered, sensually.

'Needs ironing,' he said, 'What's for dinner?'
