In Your Food

...There´s a new blog and a new podcast. I hope you find them interesting.

Some see things as they are and say "Why?" I dream of things that never were and say "Why not?" RFK's reworking of George Bernard Shaw.

"The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we hit it." - Michelangelo

There's a programme on BBC TV called Animal 24/7 and it shows the work of the RSPCA in combating animal abuse. It really is hard to imagine just how some people find their living conditions acceptable. Time and again there's video footage of someone living in squalor with their pets. Needless to say, the minute the suggestion is made that their abode is unclean hands are held up in horror. How dirty must a place get before these people realise they're living in squalor. What is even more unimaginable is when excrement from their pets decorates the room. What this programme has shown so far is mind boggling.

This morning, for example, there's this guy with three Greyhounds who are mangey. Not only do they have this problem but they are as this as can be. Bones are protruding and they look totally undernourished. The owner, as you'd expect, is totally ready to assure the RSPCA officers that the dogs are in good shape and are being well fed. This is not what the pictures show and the RSPCA have taken the dogs into care............Incidentally,the RSPCA official was saying that this is a particularly bad year for pets being dumped because their owners just don't want them any more.

The weather is better again. Yesterdat was intriguing. Around the Iberian Peninsula there was plenty of rain and the mountains were shrouded in grey clouds until around 1 pm. The sun was trying to break through the clouds and in Benidorm the microclimate kicked in. Before you could say, "Cafe con leche por favor" the Brits were bringing their shorts to the patios.Yes. If you're going to get sun this is why Benidorm is such a premium resorts. Let´s get the general picture bearing in mind the different weather peculiar to Benidorm......This forecast is for the Alicante province

Hidden hazards of nano-ingredients

I never thought I'd say this, but there's something in your food that's even worse than sugar... and this microscopic new threat isn't even listed on the ingredients label.

These tiny terrors are called "nanoparticles" or "nanomaterials," and they've been scientifically engineered to make foods look better and last longer.

But when it comes to nano, just say no-no -- because nanotechnology, as it's called, is wildly unregulated and dangerously untested. In fact, we have no idea at all what this junk might to do humans -- yet you're probably eating it right now.

Welcome to your new life as a supermarket lab rat.

What little we do know is downright frightening: A two-year study on animals at UCLA found nano-titanium dioxide -- the most common nanoparticle -- caused DNA and chromosome damage, according to AOL News.

The researchers say this kind of severe damage could lead to cancer, heart disease and brain disease... and yet these nano-particles are turning up in everything from fruit and vegetable coatings to salad dressing to ice cream.

We used to call that food tampering. Instead, the mad scientists behind this sick scheme are considered industry pioneers.

Meanwhile, the FDA is so in the dark on this one that they won't even admit it's in your food... even if its own experts say it is. In fact, the AOL News report found that 20 of the world's top food makers have their own nano-labs or contracts with universities to develop nano-ingredients for them.

And because there's no requirement to list these particles on nutritional labels, there's no way of knowing if your food has been nano-tainted... and therefore no way to avoid it.

It's reaching the point where the only way to be safe is to grow your own -- and if you have the time and space, don't wait -- spring is here. Start planting today.
