To Be or Not To Be!

...There´s a new blog and a new podcast. I hope you find them interesting.
It is a lovely sunny day but with a nip in the air here in La Nucia. The definition on the mountain is wonderful and the blue sky really sharpens its definition. I am just getting over Liverpool´s defeat last night at the hands of Arsenal. They were not outclassed although Arsenal´s possession at the start of the second half was astonishing. Chelsea faltered at the hands of Everton and Villa and Man United managed a draw. Spurs and Birmingham, like Liverpool, dropped points and all this puts Manchester City in the driving seat for the 4th spot. Well done, Everton. However, the season is far from over. I´ve received a poem from Ian K with a large grain of truth in it. I leave you to decide whether or not I agree with all the sentiments!

England my England

Goodbye to my England , So long my old friend

Your days are numbered, being brought to an end

To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh that's fine

But don't say you're English, that's way out of line.

The French and the Germans may call themselves such

So may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch

You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane

But don't say you're English ever again.

At Broadcasting House the word is taboo

In Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too

Even schools are affected. Staff do as they're told

They must not teach children about England of old.

Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw

The pupils don't learn about them anymore

How about Agincourt, Hastings , Arnhem or Mons ?

When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.

We are not Europeans, how can we be?

Europe is miles away, over the sea

We're the English from England , let's all be proud

Stand up and be counted - Shout it out loud!

Let's tell our Government and Brussels too

We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue

Fly the flag of Saint George or the Union Jack

Let the world know - WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK !!!!

Beckham´s Law

It is perhaps not surprising that Spain, a long-standing favourite for expats, remains the most popular destination for Brits moving overseas. It has a warm climate, is easy to get to thanks to low budget airlines – and it already has a large expatriate congregation which can in itself be an appeal to many.

It has many tax benefits for retirees and workers.

One of the most aired tax breaks is for foreign workers who can benefit from a law which has been dubbed the Beckham Law. It has been nicknamed after the England and former Real Madrid star because he was able to take advantage of the new law when he transferred from Manchester United to the Spanish footballing giant.

The law – designed to attract foreign workers – stipulated that a new resident could elect to become a non-resident for tax purposes for the first five years, saving themselves around 25 per cent in tax. Not such a bad perk – and although it was aimed at multi-millionaires such as Beckham, it applies across the board so workers moving to Spain can take advantage of the tax loophole. Source

I have just read one of the saddest things I have read in a long while....

Lita Broadhurst, 48, threw herself off a fourth floor balcony on Friday morning after leaving an apparent suicide note for her teenage children on her Facebook homepage.

The expat English teacher, who lived in Garrucha near Almeria on Spain´s southern coast, blamed a British associate as the source of her misery.

She jumped to her death hours before she was due to give evidence against a former associate who was appearing in a local court accused of assaulting her.

In her final message, entitled “Last Words”, she gave details of the abuse she claimed to have endured at his hands and said: “I write this in the hope that (HE) will be seen for what he is and prevented from hurting any other person who falls into his hands.”

She went on: “I am not easily beaten, but this time I can see no way out of the black hole: too often have I had to beg for help from those who love me. I am alone this time and no longer able to find the way out. I have no more than despair and fatigue within me now.” Story
